CHDR Precision Public Health Forum feat. Nicole Rogus-Pulia, PhD, CCC-SLP
“Personalized and Accessible Rehabilitation:
Perspectives from Swallowing Research”

Please join us on October 8, 2026 to welcome this month’s featured CHDR Precision Public Health Forum speaker:
Nicole Rogus-Pulia, PhD, CCC-SLP
Associate Professor (with Tenure),
Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology, Department of Medicine
Linda Banov and Howard Stern Faculty Fellow in Dysphagia
Dysphagia arises from a wide range of conditions, including stroke, neurodegenerative disease, cancer, and age-related decline, yet assessment and treatment often follow a one-size-fits-all approach, and access to specialized care is limited in rural and under-resourced communities.
Using dysphagia as a model, this talk will examine how precision health approaches that account for underlying mechanisms and individual context can improve access to rehabilitation and advance equitable care delivery.
In addition to her accomplishments in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Rogus-Pulia holds numerous appointments and leadership positions across academic, professional, and clinical environments. She is an ASHA Fellow; deputy director for Center for Health Disparities Research (CHDR); Care Research Core lead for the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center; director of the Swallowing and Salivary Bioscience Lab; joint faculty in the UW Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, and director of the multi-site Veteran Health Administration’s (VHA) Intensive Dysphagia Treatment (IDT) program.
This hybrid event will take place in person in 3110B and via Zoom.
A light lunch will be provided for in-person attendees.
Registration is appreciated but not required.
About the CHDR Precision Public Health Forum
Coordinated by the Center for Health Disparities Research (CHDR), the CHDR Precision Public Health Forum operates as an open, collaborative, multidisciplinary space for members of the research, public health, health equity, clinical, and policy communities to share their work and perspectives on precision public health, contextualized through the lens of exposome science, systemic health equity, and health disparities research.
The monthly series complements existing and emerging efforts across SMPH to lead precision public health by providing a platform to bring diverse perspectives into conversation and concert, creating space for exchange across disciplinary boundaries and contributing to a shared language and understanding of precision public health as an emerging interdisciplinary field and SMPH strategic priority.
The forum is held on the second Thursday of every month at 1:00 p.m. CT. For the best experience, we recommend joining us in person in 3110B HSLC. For those unable to attend in person, the event will be available via Zoom webinar.
The forum is free, and all are welcome to attend. We hope you will join us.
